LGBT ELDER SUMMIT UPDATE
Dear LGBT Summit Attendees and Friends:
We would like to update you on the progress that has been made since the LGBT Elder Summit last October. We also want to make you aware of the many opportunities for your continued involvement in moving the LGBT Elder agenda forward.
Following the Summit, a diverse group of individuals convened as the LGBT Elder Initiative (LGBTEI) to begin to implement the priorities agreed upon at the Summit. This group of approximately 20 people includes representatives from the community, area agencies on aging, local government and LGBT organizations. Initially, the LGBTEI formulated the following mission statement:
"The Delaware Valley LGBT Elder Initiative is committed to assuring that LGBT older adults have rights and opportunities to live vibrant, creative and mutually supportive lives. To achieve this vision, the mission of the Delaware Valley LGBT Elder Initiative is to foster and advocate for services and resources that are culturally competent, inclusive and responsive to the needs of LGBT elders in the Delaware Valley and beyond."
In addition to the adoption of the mission statement, committees have been formed to address the priorities outlined at the Summit. The committees are:
Organizational Structure/Development: Solidify organizational structure and develop funding sources.
Policy: Research and identify existing polices and their impact, both positive and negative, on the LGBT Elder community and providers. Develop
policy statements and white papers and advocate when necessary. Educate policy makers, community members and service providers.
Access: Promote access to services for LGBT Elders through the use of all tools available and create community-wide awareness of the LGBTEI. Provide sensitivity training for providers to insure that their services are LGBT inclusive/friendly.
Networking: Connect LGBT Elders in the Delaware Valley to provide all with the opportunity for a vibrant social life. Facilitate networking among service providers, elders, funders and other stakeholders.
Coalition Building/Advocacy: Develop a group of active, older adults who are interested in becoming “activists” for LGBT Elder issues. Forge connections with other local and/or national groups that are engaged in issues of social and economic justice to put LGBT concerns, issues and perspectives on the agenda. Further, the Coalition Building / Advocacy Committee will consider social and economic justice issues and how these impact LGBT Elders.
Communications: Work with all committees to develop messaging tools and vehicles with which to interact with media (both new and old and LGBT-specific and mainstream) to inform LGBT communities and other interested parties about issues, resources and the activities of the LGBTEI.
Terri Clark, MPH, CHES, Prevention Services Coordinator at ActionAIDS, and Heshie Zinman, former Executive Director of The AIDS Information Network, were appointed co-chairs of the Delaware Valley LGBTEI. Terri will oversee programmatic operations and Heshie will be responsible for the organizational structure process and the development of funding sources.
While the LGBTEI has been forming committees and establishing priorities, much has been happening in the LGBT Elder Community at large. According to Mark Segal, Publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News, $8 million has been raised for the proposed LGBT Senior Housing Project. The proposed project would be built on the space along side and atop the William Way Community Center at Spruce and Juniper Streets in Philadelphia. A total of $20 million will be necessary to complete the proposed project. Approval by the state government will also be necessary.
In May, a panel discussion about the LGBT Elder Summit and the Elder Initiative was held at the Equality Forum. Nancy Knauer, Michele Mathes and Heshie Zinman served as the panelists. More than 100 people attended the discussion which was moderated by Michael Adams of Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE).
The LGBT Elder Movement is in its embryonic stages in the Delaware Valley. There is much work to be done and your expertise is invaluable in the process of identifying and satisfying the needs of the LGBT Elder Community. Your input and service will be enthusiastically welcomed in any area. The Initiative’s short term resource needs include: grant writers, communication professionals and advocacy experts -- just to name a few. To explore opportunities to volunteer you can contact us at LGBTElderInitiative@Gmail.com. To get regular updates visit us at www.LGBTElderInitiative.Blogspot.com or on Facebook.
Sincerely,
Terri Clark and Heshie Zinman
